CoRHAC: A voice in health care policy for rural Colorado. The Colorado Rural Health Advocacy Coalition has brought together five organizations – Action 22, Club 20, Colorado Rural Health Center, Progressive 15 and Rocky Mountain Farmers Union – to develop a structure and voice for the rural health care needs to Colorado. The Colorado Health Foundation has provided start up funding through a grant to the new organization.

While Coloradans across the state are experiencing challenges with their health and health care access, people living in rural Colorado experience additional health disparities as a result of their geographic location, and the barriers this presents. Rural people are more likely to be living in poverty, be uninsured or underinsured, and have limited access to health services and public transportation. Rural Coloradoans have a higher incidence of mortality related to employment and motor vehicle accidents, largely because comprehensive services are not available to respond to such emergencies in a timely manner.

Goals:

• Create forum and process to gather and disseminate rural health care information.
• Facilitate a unified health care voice for rural Colorado.
• Minimize adverse unintended consequences for rural Colorado in health care policy.
